How do I know if I need a capacitor? I have right at 1050 watts RMS, and not sure if I need one. Something to look / listen for?

Also, are there good ones and bad ones out there?

If you already have one use it, if you are going to spend the money on one, you will be better off in a marine enviroment to use that $$$ for an extra battery.

A cap fills in when the voltage drops but since the charging system in a boat is static (generally not running or charging) the battery reacts quickly

I have 2 batteries and a cap. Running about 1900 watts. Having the cap won't pull has hard on your batteries when huge bass notes hit. With the cap my voltage does not seem to drop as fast on my batteries. PM John P he is an audio dealer he can sell you a cap or just give you advice. Blue tops are definitely the way to go!

That sounds like a ground loop problem.
You can either disconnect the charger (which is providing the other grounding point), or i *think* you can beef up the grounding on your boat. Someone else will need to chime in for resolutions.
