    Solar Eclipse

Most of you have already heard about the eclipse that will happen in a little over a week from now.
Ground zero will pass over a little town north east of Jeff City.
    Mokane Mo.
Plenty of parking and open space, the wife and friends will be there tail gating for the event.
Anyone wanting to join this small town event, please come on by.
No bands, no fair, two small bars, and friendly country folk.
    It's also a nice drive up 94.
Here is what you can expect to see.

Oh, I'll probably be driving an old red Ford pickup with no tail gate.

    Solar Eclipse

Southwest has added many flights for all the tourists flying into St. Louis for the event. Many of the schools in STL are closed and my work is allowing everyone to work from home. It's predicted to be gridlock on the highways. Many of my friends and neighbors are taking vacation days or have arranged to wrk from home.

Really, really looking forward to it--and praying for clear skies. Bought solar filters and solar film for my cameras and videocameras a few months ago. Going to test and get everything ready this week.

FWIW, I'm relying on the NASA maps as a guide: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-maps

I was scoping out spots in Jeff City yesterday. I'd love to get timelapse photos of the Missouri River during the eclipse, but I'm worried that it might be too crowded at the Jeff City river access. How about that river access ramp south of Mokane?. That might be a great spot. Do you think there will be a big crowd there? Is there much parking available there? (I have lots of cameras, lenses and tripods to bring along--plus a tent--so I need to park close to where I'll be shooting.)

Mokane Lions Park has a lot more open area and parking than the Mokane boat ramp.
Do a google street view of Mokane and you will see what I mean.
It also passes 1600 feet from our house.
PM me and I'll get you a spot in the middle of a 15 acre hay field.
But you will be alone out there.

    Don:

I see what you mean about the Lions Park. Plenty of space there, indeed.

I plan to come up early in the morning (8:00-9:00?), and will probably scope out the river access ramp area first. Iím guessing that that no one in Mokane will see a need to view the eclipse from the river, and those traveling from elsewhere to see the eclipse wonít consider such an out-of-the-way location like a boat ramp to see it. (Of course, Iíve been wrong once or twice in my life. )

Before heading toward the Mokane access ramp, though, I might try to find an out-of-the-way spot east of the airport where I could try to capture Jefferson Cityís street lights coming on, as well as the airportís runway lights. That might make for some nice photos. We'll see.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

    Jim

The places you have circled on your last aerial view will also be some good spots to see Jeff city from.
I'll be coming back from the lake late this afternoon, if I think about it, I'll drive down thru there.
You do know now, you will have to post up pictures after the event.

The shadow will be passing right by my backyard. However I'll be heading to a winery in Defiance, MO, to enjoy the 2 minute show.

There is a rumor here that the Menards in St Joe has rented their parking lot to a bunch of Chinese people who hope to conceive during the eclipse.

So ... why is it millions of people can stare at a sun set for 15 to 20 minutes every night and be fine
However if you look at a solar eclipse , when the sun is actually blocked out , your eyes will burn out of your head
    And cameras will explode

Yeah the single most important thing that gives us life is now the deadliest element in our lives. That's 2017 for ya.
In another 20 years they'll decide that sunlight CURES cancer.

I drove by the north side of the river today.
And there is a spot that you can see the capital building from.
BUT, nothing else and it is right next to the sewage treatment facility.
So be aware, of which way the wind is blowing.
The wife and I have invited friends and family to be at the Mokane Lions park.
Probably close to the rock jail house that was built pre 1900.
I'll have a deep fryer going for snacks right out of the pot.
We should be there by 10 am and start frying about 11:30.
Everybody is invited and if you want to bring something to fry or a cold side dish, bring it on.
Chairs, awnings and solar glasses are advised to bring also.

One last thing to bring for every person, A flashlight!
