Giving is Living… it up. “Hell Yeah” to Giving Back!

Snow on the ground. The private jet sits on the tarmac, immaculate and prepared, waiting for its passengers. Wheels up at 2 p.m. After only two hours in flight the jet lands at the southernmost point. Cars and security personnel meet guests and escort them to the harbor, where a 145-foot yacht awaits, and 10 crew members rush to assist. Fresh crab claws and caviar paired with Champagne and seasonal island fruit are served upon arrival. The warm salt air at sunset and the steadiness of the beautiful floating accommodations, along with the sounds of the ocean, makes the Champagne’s smell and taste even more superb. This is living!

But really, living is plainly waking up everyday with a heartbeat. What makes the living worthwhile is what you do with your gift of life. Experiencing good things and having opportunities is ultimately the balloon in this party of living. But what gives the balloon life is the air that goes in it. Whether challenging or successful—your career, raising children, caring for an elderly parent, or facing and battling illness— each experience adds a little air to your balloon.

You know the drill: It’s better to give than to receive. Beginning in childhood I have been drilled with this quote. It stuck. My memories are plastered with evenings and weekends tightly scheduled with community service tasks and multiple visits to nursing homes and fund-raising events. Jan and Gary taught us Martinette kids right. Even today my mother’s schedule hasn’t changed. Both my parents have wished not to have a funeral but instead to have friends and family remember them by spending time doing something for someone else. Pretty noble. Maybe this explains why I enjoy raising funds more than raising revenue, or donating funds rather than going on a sales call. Just ask my accountant.

Oh, not to worry. I’m passing down the teaching and family tradition to my own special kiddos. When Mira was just age 5, after a birthday party of 12 children, with 24 leftover balloons, the kids and I headed to Lake Regional Hospital. We were directed to a special wing where the kids were allowed. With a permanent marker, Mira drew a perfect smiley face on each balloon as she walked in and greeted each ailing patient with her balloon gift. We all felt something so wonderful. No matter the pain or ailment, the patient smiled as if the balloon gift was a mountain of gold, or even Champagne and caviar. Now, this is living.

With each day’s accomplishments, we keep pumping a little more air into the balloon of life. Eventually, the purpose of this common party decoration fulfills its task when it’s at full air capacity. My goal is to keep filling balloons with experiences, community service efforts, accomplishing goals, facing challenges, understanding other’s needs and realizing how precious life is through the strengths of my peers.

Ultimately, the purpose of a decorative balloon is to add life and smiles to any situation. Hopefully at the end of my journey I can say I have “lived it up” with a roomful of life and smiles.

THIS ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO MANY FRIENDS AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATES WHO ARE GIVING BACK TO OUR LAKE COMMUNITY. ALSO A SPECIAL “hell yeah” TO MY PINK FRIENDS WHO HAVE FOUGHT THEIR CHALLENGES AND WHO PROVE ON A DAILY BASIS THAT STRENGTH COMES FROM THE HEART.

Hey, whose name is on that Team Penske car?

Last week was EMS Week and Nascar honored several of us by putting our names on the car instead of the driver name. My name was on Ryan Blakeys number
