    Boat accident Saturday afternoon (8/10/19)

I cringe whenever someone in the water gets hit by a boat.

A PWC “turned in front of” a pontoon boat, and the operator and passenger on the PWC fell off. The pontoon tried to avoid them, but ended up hitting the 20 year-old female passenger. She was flown to Columbia.

PWC Fatality. Will be interesting to see cause of death on this one? Possibly medical?

We were at Frankie and Louie’s when a private boat brought her in. The medics treated her in the boat before loading her on the stretcher. I am no Dr, but it appeared to me that she was going to be OK. I am guessing that the flight was due to the local hospital not having a “head” doctor available at the time. My wife and a friend talked to the gal that brought them in and she said they saw the accident and that it was the dads fault. Hopefully she will be OK.

We were coming back from Ha Ha Tonka and overtaking a pair of jet skis on the Big Niangua near the mouth of the Little Niangua.

I passed the first one with no issue. It was "Mama Bear" and she acknowledged that I was overtaking her. The next ski was her "Cub" and I noted that he had not looked back or acknowledged that I was passing him.

Sure enough.. at the last moment the youngster makes a sharp turn across my bow. I chopped the throttle, hit the horn, and held my breath until he reappeared in my view.

Mama Bear, behind me, saw it all go down. She almost watched her Cub get run over. She was in full pursuit mode when I looked back.

I drive vehicles and boats anticipating the worst action from my fellow drivers/boaters. I am sure Mama Bear made it clear to her young Cub that he was about mulched due to his lack of attention.

I hope all involved in this accident will recover.

The biggest thing I see with PWCs is the wake jumping. I don’t mind if they do it but look behind the boats wake you are jumping to make sure no one else is coming behind them. They usually run in packs so they are going both ways. One a busy day in the main channel you better be on a swivel if that is your game.

Later in the summer the kids seem to get a little to comfortable for their own good. I see them turn abruptly all the time. The ones that make me the most nervous are the ones that dont mind running 20' along side you, they become used to being around boats and then they forget that the PWC's abrupt turns become dangerous really quick especially if the boat driver changes course.

Would if somebody in their Tritoon, Cigarette, cruiser, or bass boat drove identical to how jet skis are ridden? I suspect they would be pulled over and ticketed. The rules are the same. I look at the accidents quite a bit, and I am betting that at least 1/2 involve a jet ski, and most of those are from jumping wakes and face planting, or hitting another boat. With this, why does Water Patrol not crack down on them more? What happens on the lake in regard to jet skis would be akin to letting motorcycles do whatever they wanted to do on the streets.

Too much effort for WP to pull over a ski, they are not as easy of a target as a boat, and they have other things to worry about than wreckless driving

besides, if they arrest the driver they probably don't have a totally unqualified passenger to turn the ski over to like they do with regular boats so they have to tow it somewhere and secure it.
Never liked those loud obnoxious boats, until I bought one of my own.

They have TowboatUS take it back to the dock. Happened to someone at our condo complex with two PWCs. Water patrol escorted the tow service and waited for the owner to pay.
